William G. Talley, of Eureka, died on Friday, December 9, 2005 at Medicalodge in Eureka, at the age of 92.
He was born on August 27, 1913, in Garland, Texas, the son of Thomas Cates and Laura Blanche (Wallace) Talley. He was raised in Garland, and graduated from Garland High School. During the Great Depression, he worked in west Texas at an onion-culling farm. He later worked as a cook in Ruidoso, New Mexico. Bill later moved to Eureka, to work at a creamery, opened by his brother-in-law, Leroy Paul.
On June 15, 1941, Bill was united in marriage to Ruby Luella Bula, in Kingman, Kansas. The family made their home in Eureka. At the onset of World War II, Bill enlisted in the United States Army and served his country with honor and dignity in the European Theater. He received a Purple Heart after receiving shrapnel wounds in Salerno, Italy. He also received a Bronze Star Medal for his heroic attempt to save a fellow soldiers life, in the waters of Mehdia Beach, French Morocco. He continued his service in the Army until the end of World War II. When Bill returned to Eureka, he opened the State Farm insurance office in Eureka. He retired in 1979. Ruby preceded him in death on August 10, 1992.
He was a member of the Lions Club for over 50 years.
Bill is survived by one son, Tom Talley, of Arden, North Carolina; two daughters, Susan B. Case, of Kansas City, Missouri; and Sandra Graves of Hutchinson; four grandchildren; and one sister, Helen Paul, of Kingman. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, and seven brothers.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M, Tuesday, December 13, 2005 at Koup Family Funeral Home, with Mr. Jayme A. Koup officiating. Interment will follow in Greenwood Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that memorials be made to the Greenwood County Hospital.
