William Eugene “Gene” Sprague, a longtime resident of Eureka, KS passed away on Saturday, March 1, 2025, at Greenwood County Hospital in Eureka. He was 92.

Gene was born on June 20, 1932, in Delaware, OK, the son of William Irven and Mildred Juanita (Martin) Sprague. His formative years began in Nowata City schools, but his family later relocated to Eureka, KS, where he completed his education, graduating with the Class of 1951 from Eureka High School.

In 1953, Gene was drafted by the United States Army to serve during the Korean War where he served with UN forces on the Kansas Line, a strategically important defensive position north of the 38th parallel, during a critical phase of the conflict. He rose to the rank of Corporal, a testament to his dedication and fortitude.

In 1955 he met Shirley Thompson at Mildred's Café in Eureka. On June 1, 1957, they were united in marriage. They made their home in Eureka and raised their son.

Gene dedicated many years to public service, working as a corrections officer at El Dorado Correctional Facility. His commitment to community extended beyond his profession, as he was a member of Fidelity Lodge 108, the Midian Shrine, and a lifetime member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2712. In his spare time, Gene would enjoy target practice at the gun range and taking photos, always capturing that perfect moment.

Gene is survived by his son, Gary and fiancé, Nancy of Bel Aire, KS; two granddaughters, Rebecca Sprague-Gangle and husband, Michael of Shawnee, KS; and Stefanie Taylor and husband, Christopher of Chanute, KS; and four great-grandchildren, Cayden, Emily, and Bradly Taylor, and Ava Gangle. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; an infant sister, Billie Jean Sprague; and one great-granddaughter, Gracelyn Gangle.
