William E. “Eddie” Bobbitt, 89, of Eureka died Friday, November 26, 2004, in Eureka.

He was born 13 May 1915, the fourth child of Fred and Pauline Denner Bobbitt. Eddie was born west of Bachelor creek in the Tonovay community where he attended all twelve grades and graduated with the class of 1935.

In 1937, he traveled to California to find work and later joined the army there. Eddie served his country with distinction in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater, where he was awarded the Purple Heart, Bronze Star, and various campaign medals. He was discharged in September 1945 with the rank of First Sergeant.

He married Normalie Brown on 24 June 1947, in the Sacred Heart Church, Eureka, Kansas. They lived in Wichita where Eddie was a postal clerk for 30 years, retiring in September 1973.

Eddie and Normalie owned several rental properties over the years and traveled extensively in all 50 states and 12 European countries. They rarely missed Eddie’s Army reunions and he was a lifetime (43-year) member of V.F.W. Post #2712. He was also a charter member of the Greenwood County Historical Society and the Yates Center Chapter of the Oldtime Fiddlers, Pickers, and Singers.

Eddie is survived by Normalie, his wife of 57 years, one sister, Margaret Hale of Eureka and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers Elmer, Howard and infant George Max; sisters, Della Campbell Storey, Mildred Bishop Willis, and Leda Essick Christlieb.

A family visitation will be held from 6 P.M. to 8 P.M., Monday, November 29, 2004 at Koup Family Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M., Tuesday, November 30, 2004 at the funeral home, with Pastor Alan Hunter of the Jefferson Street Baptist Church officiating.

In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Eureka Senior Center.
