Warren Garcia Foster of Eureka, died on March 1, 2005, at Greenwood County Hospital, in Eureka, at the age of 83
He was born on March 14, 1921, in Alva, Oklahoma, the son of Claude and Lois (Chick) Foster. He was raised in the Alva and Enid, Oklahoma areas. In 1940, the family moved to Emporia. Warren graduated from Alva High School and later attended Emporia State Teachers College. Warren served in the National Guard, 45th Division Thunderbirds for two years.
On September 2, 1942, Warren was united in marriage to Ruby Mae Jones in Alva, Oklahoma.
Warren served four years in the United State Navy, achieving the rate of Boatswain, First Class. He participated in the invasion of Sicily, the African, Middle-Eastern, and Asiatic Pacific campaigns during World War II.
His commendations include the following ribbons, with four battle stars; American Area - one bronze star; Europe, Africa, Middle East – one bronze star; Asiatic, Pacific Area – two bronze stars; Navy Expeditionary Medal – two bronze stars, Veterans of Foreign Wars; Good Conduct, and a commendation for conspicuous bravery by Vice Admiral Randall Jacobs, during the Sicily Invasion.
He was honorably discharged on July 3, 1945. At the time, Warren and Ruby were stationed in Orange, Texas, where their son, Gary Lynn Foster was born on May 15, 1945.
They moved to Emporia, Kansas later that year. Warren worked in Law Enforcement in Emporia and for the Kansas Department of Revenue, from which he retired in 1985, after 35 years of service, retiring as a supervisor for the division of weights and measures. He was active with the Boy Scouts, and local politics. He was a member of the Kansas Peace Officers Association, the American Legion, the Veteran’s of Foreign Wars, and the Disabled American Veterans.
He is survived by his wife, Ruby; grandsons, Craig Foster of San Francisco, California, Erik Foster of Emporia, and Stanley Foster of Emporia; brother and sister-in-law, Earl and Helen Foster of Harker Heights, Texas, brother and sister-in-law, Lynn and Linda Foster of Hartford, Kansas; sister and brother-in-law, Melvina and Glenn Bible of San Antonio, Texas; and sister-in-law, Muriel Foster of Hurst, Texas.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his son, Gary; one brother, Edward; and one sister, Lois Smith.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M., Saturday, March 5, 2005 at Greenwood Abbey, Greenwood Cemetery, Eureka, with Pastor Fred Jordan and Rev. Dr. Gilbert Daniel officiating.
