Walter J. Brockett, of Neal, died at the Greenwood County Hospital in Eureka, on Friday, September 26, 2003, at the age of 78.
He was born in Dripping Springs, Oklahoma on January 25, 1925, the son of Walter Theodore and Bessie Mae (Mason) Brockett. He was raised in Siloam Springs, Arkansas and attended the Mosley Prairie Rural Schools. Walter then worked for his father at a family owned sawmill.
On August 9, 1943, Walter was united in marriage to Veta DeGraff in Siloam Springs, Arkansas. After marriage, Walter and Veta moved to Springfield, Colorado and then lived in different places throughout the United States. They then moved to Liberal, Kansas, where Walter worked at the National Beef Packing Plant. After retirement in 1996, they moved and made their home in Neal.
Walter is survived by his wife, Veta, of the home; four sons, Kenneth of Greeley, Colorado, Larry of Olney Springs, Colorado, Steve of Bridgeport, Texas, and Donald of Alamogordo, New Mexico; two daughters, Charlet Smith of Wichita, and Sharon Wooderson of Neal; one sister, Lorene Stith of Sutherland, Oregon; 17 grandchildren and 20 great grandchildren.
Graveside services were held at the Neal Cemetery on Tuesday, September 30, 2003, at 2:00 P.M. with Pastor Larry Evans officiating. A memorial has been established in his name with the American Heart Association. Contributions may be sent in care of Koup Family Funeral Home in Eureka, which was in charge of service arrangements.
