Von Dean Carney was born in Seiling, Oklahoma, April 7, 1947 to Harley and Evelyn Trim Carney. He was the youngest of the boys but weighed in at 10 lbs; twenty two inches long. He helped out on the farm by doing his chores and he didn’t seem to think he was poor, because he never went hungry. Several occasions they went for Sunday celebrations to Grandma Carney. His other siblings, John, Connie, and Dale were always picking on him. Some stories were said that Dale and Von were always playing tricks on Connie and their adventures got them into trouble. He attended Seiling Elementary Grade school and Fortuna, California High School where he helped his Dad in the logging industry. Von Dean Carney was married to Roberta Laird in 1965 upon entering the U. S. Army and adopted three children Charles Anthony (1); Tena Marie (3); and Timothy Lee (4). Mr. Carney retired after twenty years of service. While he was in the military he squared the nice name Paps, a key to understanding his philosophy of life. His tours took him to Bombholder Germany, Fort Knox, Kentucky, and Viet Nam. He was a scout and very busy life. He received numerous rifle and Purple Heart awards. He was a kind and giving person.
After retirement the family moved to Chetopa, Kansas and Moorehead, Kansas. He raised Pacifino horses for eight years on the prarie grassland and raised hunting dogs, brittanies, and German short haired dogs. His favorites were Ruby/ brittany and Ben.
He furthered his education and received an Associate of Arts degree in working with special needs children. His work schedule at Parsons State Hospital as a Cottage Supervisor, for nine years was challenging. In 1995 he lost his beloved companion to a long illness Roberta Carney.
He relocated to Neodesha, Kansas and worked for Creative Community Living 1998-1999 where he met the sparkle of his eye Valerie Freeman, Meinhardt. They worked together as a team at Creative Community Living working with developmentally challenged adults.
He became disabled and enjoyed several hobbies such as hunting, reading Louis L-Amour books, loved western tv shows especially John Wayne. He developed a woodworking art of refinishing and selling antiqutes.
His gift from God as a good father and husband was felt by everyone. He was caring, a good listener, and loved all children especially his (3) grandchildren and (6) great grandchildren.
He married Valerie Freeman Meinhardt on January 8, 2007, at the Kansas Heart Hospital in Wichita, Kansas. Wedding Reception provided by Kansas Heart ICU unit.
Survivors include Valerie Carney, wife of the home, and Connie Summerfield, a sister from Eagle Rock, Missouri.
He is preceded in death by Tim Carney/son Harley and Evelyn Carney, Shirley Mae Carney/sister and brother/ Dale Carney and John Carney/brother.hobbies included he then worked at the creative community Living center in El Dorado, Kansas. There he met Valerie Freeman Meinhardt,.
He died on Sunday March 4, 2007, at the Kansas Heart Hospital. We will miss our beloved and shining start brought to us by the angels, where he is in his home of God.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M., Thursday, March 8, 2007 at Christ Lutheran Church with Pastor Larry Cross officiating. Interment will follow in Greenwood Cemetery. Arrangements were handled by Koup Family Funeral Home.
