Virginia (Gaffney) Rice-Sowder of Eureka, died on Tuesday, May 1, 2012 at the Eureka Nursing Center in Eureka at the age of 84.

She was born on October 5, 1927, in Eureka, the daughter of Burlin Fae and Fern Elizabeth (Scroggins) Gaffney. She was raised in Eureka and graduated from Eureka High School. On May 21, 1948 she was united in marriage to Lloyd O. Rice, Sr. They made their home in Eureka. He preceded her in death on February 25, 1965.

Virginia was a homemaker and well as a full-time bookkeeper. She worked for Jackson Bros. for twenty years, as well as doing taxes and book work for small businesses, farmers, and ranchers on nights and weekends. She retired in 1987. In the early 80’s she was united in marriage to Gilbert Sowder. They made their home in Eureka. He preceded her in death on September 24, 1986.

She is survived by three children, Lloyd O. Rice, Jr. of Eureka; Kay Rice of Eureka; and Ann Marshall of Washington, Missouri; one grandson, Michael Marshall of Washington, Missouri; seven step-grandchildren; nine step-great-grandchildren; numerous step-great-great-grandchildren; one sister, Carol J. Shirley of Eureka; two nieces, Karen and husband, David Bentley of Hamilton; and Bibs and husband, Gilbert Jaramillo of Viselia, California; and one nephew, Burlin and wife, Jackie Patterson of Central Conway, New Hampshire. She was preceded in death by her husbands, one son, Jere, and one sister, Doris Fae Patterson.

Memorial services will be held at 11:00 A.M., Friday, May 4, 2012 at Greenwood Cemetery, in Eureka with Pastor Gary Boles of the Moline Community Fellowship officiating.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that memorials be made to Alex’s House Animal Rescue or to VFW Post #2712. Contributions may be sent in care of Koup Family Funeral Home at P.O. Box 595, Eureka, KS 67045, which was in charge of service arrangements.
