Virgil R. McCormack
Virgil Rex McCormack was born south of Moran, Kansas, on September 1, 1920, to Fredrick Percy McCormack and Myrtle Alice Ferguson, the youngest of three children. He departed on October 18, 2014, at the Life Care Center, Andover, Kansas, where he resided for two days after a stay at the hospital. When Virgil was four years old, the family moved to the original Ferguson farm east of Climax. After the death of his mother in 1929, Virgil’s sister and brother-in-law, Genevieve and Leslie Twadell, along with their daughter, Leonore, moved from Moran to the farm to care for Virgil and their farm.
Virgil graduated from Climax High School in 1938.On December 30, 1939, Virgil was united in marriage to Laura Mae Wellman of Severy, Kansas, in El Dorado, Kansas. To this union were born two children, Harold and Evelyn. Virgil and Laura Mae started their married life on a farm east of Moran, moving back to the Ferguson farm in 1944. Virgil’s father lived with the family until his death in 1958. In 1948 the family moved to Climax due to the Fall River Reservoir being built. Virgil and Laura Mae moved to farm west of Climax in 1968 and returned to the home in Climax in 2003.
Virgil loved being a farmer and enjoyed the last few years riding around in his Scout, watching the crops grow. He always said the grass was greener and air fresher in Greenwood County than anywhere else in the world. Virgil and Laura Mae enjoyed their family, camping, dancing, and Blue Grass Festivals. Virgil was a member of the Climax Methodist Church, Climax Masonic Lodge #411 for 72 years, and lifetime member of the Order of Eastern Star. He was also active in numerous organizations and community activities over the years.
Virgil was preceded in death by his parents, Fred and Myrtle, wife of 71 years Laura Mae, brother Clara, sister and brother-in-law Genevieve and Leslie Twadell, and nephew Tom Twadell.
Virgil is survived by his son, Harold (Linda) of Climax and daughter, Evelyn Hendrickson of Brenham, Texas. Grandchildren, Dana (Brad) Metzger of Burlington, Mark (Teresa) Hendrickson of Eureka, Greg (Lori) McCormack of Silver Lake, Leslie (Joe) Fitzgerald of Tomball, Texas, Kelly McCormack of El Dorado. Great-grandchildren, Jason McCoy, Tyler and Allyx Barnhart; Ambrea, Beth and Grace Hendrickson; Kyle McCormack; and Cannon McCormack. Great-great-grand daughter Brihanna McCoy. Six step-grandchildren and two step-great-great-grandchildren. Niece Leonore Tharp of San Clemente, California. A host of relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be at 11:00 A.M., Tuesday, October 21, 2014 at Koup Family Funeral Home with Pastor Kevin Lawrence officiating. Interment will follow at Greenwood Cemetery, Eureka.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that memorials be made to the Climax Methodist Church. Contributions may be sent in care of Koup Family Funeral Home, P.O. Box 595, Eureka, KS 67045, which was in charge of service arrangements.
