Virgil Lee Cox, of Eureka, died on Saturday, November 29, 2008 at Greenwood County Hospital in Eureka, at the age of 75.

He was born on May 17, 1933 in Thayer, the son of John and Lola (Baker) Cox. Early in Virgil’s life, the family moved to and began farming in Galesburg. Later the family moved to Longton. Virgil attended local schools and graduated from Severy High School. After his schooling he went to work at Boeing in Wichita. Virgil began working in law enforcement first as Marshall of Severy, Undersheriff of Greenwood County from 1960-1964, and Sheriff from 1964 to 1968.

On November 25, 1962, Virgil was united in marriage to Jessie “Joan” Colvin in Eureka where they made their home. She preceded him in death on September 16, 2007.

On January 1, 1970, Virgil started the Greenwood County Ambulance Service, of which he was the Director for many years. He was also a volunteer firefighter for Eureka, as well as Greenwood County. Virgil retired from the ambulance service in 1994. He began working as a safety officer for various construction firms including Blackburn, and CDH, until his retirement in 2007.

Virgil was a member of the Masons Fidelity Lodge #106, York Rite, the Midian Shrine, Greenwood County 3-Wheelers, the Kansas Peace Officers Association, and the Christian & Congregational Church. He was an avid hunter, fisherman, and bowler, with a perfect game of 300.

He is survived by one son, Carl F. “C.F.” Cox of Eureka; one daughter, Karen Vinson of Wichita; two grandchildren; one brother, John Cox, Jr. of Wichita; and two sisters, Mildred Ward of Coffeyville; and Sue Sprague of South Coffeyville, Oklahoma. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, and two sons, David and Joseph.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 A.M., Tuesday, December 2, 2008 at Koup Family Funeral Home, in Eureka, with Rev. Rhonda Almond of the Christian & Congregational Church officiating. Interment will follow in Greenwood Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that memorials be made to the Midian Shrine Plane of Mercy or to the Christian & Congregational Church. Contributions may be sent in care of Koup Family Funeral Home at P.O. Box 595, Eureka, KS 67045, which was in charge of service arrangements.
