Velvah Fern Downard died Saturday, July 31, 2004, at Medicalodges of Eureka in Eureka, Kansas, at the age of 91

. She was born on May 22, 1913, in Greenwood County, Kansas to Joseph & Margaret (McKnight) Booth. She was married to Guy Downard in 1943 and together they had four children: Karen Kiene of South Bend, Indiana, Darby Downard of Eureka, and John Francis and Donald Dwight who both died in infancy.

Together Guy and Velvah owned the Downards Market grocery store: “Guaranteed Toughest Meat in Town.” Velvah was a member of the First Christian Church. She worked at the Peter Pan Ice Cream Parlor and the Greenwood County Hospital where she retired in 1987.

She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, two brothers, Embert and Raymond, one sister, Reba, and two sons.

Velvah is survived by her two children, Karen and Darby, two brothers, Bill Booth of Covina, California, Leonard Booth of Eureka, two sisters, Ann Carter of Nixa, Missouri, Margaret Howe of Huntington Beach, California, four grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 A.M., Wednesday, August 4, 2004 at Koup Family Funeral Home with Reverend Dr. Gilbert Daniel officiating. Interment will follow in Greenwood Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to the Greenwood County Hospital Employee Fund or the Medicalodge Employee Fund. Contributions may be sent in care of the funeral home.
