Velma Irene Hobbs of Fall River, died on Monday, February 14, 2011 at Golden LivingCenter in Fredonia, at the age of 92.

She was born on June 16, 1918 in Fredonia, the daughter of Charles and Nellie (Rothgeb) Mathis. She was raised in Fredonia, graduating from Altoona High School with the class of 1936. On June 20, 1936, she was united in marriage to Gerald Cobal in Iola. This marriage later ended in divorce. After her schooling, she moved to Wichita. In Wichita, she worked as a waitress, later becoming a nurse and working at Wesley Medical Center.

On May 30, 1954, Velma was united in marriage to Ardys Hobbs in Wichita. They traveled the country with a camping group. They made their home in Fall River, and later Eureka. Ardys preceded her in death on August 3, 2000. Velma again lived in Fall River before she moved to the Golden LivingCenter in Fredonia.

Velma was a member of the Fall River Christian Church.

She is survived by a host of friends. She was preceded death by one son, Gerald Cobal, and two brothers.

Graveside services will be held at 2:00 P.M., Friday, February 18, 2011, at Greenwood Cemetery, in Eureka with Mr. Jayme A. Koup officiating.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that memorials be made to the Golden LivingCenter of Fredonia. Contributions may be sent in care of Koup Family Funeral Home at P.O. Box 595, Eureka, KS 67045, which was in charge of service arrangements.
