Velma Ruth (Chesterman) Churchman, of Lenexa, formerly of Eureka, passed on to be with our Father in heaven on October 10, 2009, at Lakeview Village of Lenexa at the age of 92.
She was born on November 27, 1916, in Zook, Kansas the daughter of Frank Oliver and Myrtle Viola (Cornell) Chesterman. She was raised in Zook and graduated in 1934. After her schooling, Velma went to Halstead where she enrolled in nurses training. Later she went to work at Aero Parts during WWII doing her part during the war effort. She later worked a variety of jobs including a nurse’s aide, waitress, and for the water district.
On June 9, 1946, she married Virgil Ira Glen Churchman in Wichita. He preceded her in death on December 4, 1954.
She was member of the Christian and Congregational Church of Eureka. Her strong faith in God's love and grace sustained her to the end.
She is survived by her daughter Kathleen K. Lewis of Overland Park; four grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; two brothers, Clarence Chesterman of Royal City, Washington, and Donald Chesterman of Junction City; and one sister, Lela Kilpatrick of Wichita. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; an infant son; a daughter, Marilyn M. McKellar; two brothers; and three sisters.
Funeral services will be at 2:00 P.M., Friday, October 16, 2009, at Koup Family Funeral Home, in Eureka with Reverend Rhonda Almond of the Christian & Congregational Church officiating. Viewing will take place during business hours on Thursday, October 15. Interment will follow in Greenwood Cemetery.
The family has requested that memorials be made to Grace Hospice of Kansas City. Contributions may be sent in care of Koup Family Funeral Home at P.O. Box 595, Eureka, KS 67045, which was in charge of service arrangements.
