Tommie Lee Grooms of Eureka, died on Friday, April 15, 2011 at Via Christi (St. Francis) Hospital, in Wichita, at the age of 84.
He was born on November 13, 1926, in Fredonia, the son of Thomas and Roberta (Seguine) Grooms. He was raised in Fredonia and attended local schools, moving to Eureka in the 6th grade. When he was 17, Tommie joined the United States Navy, serving his country in the Philippines with honor and dignity. After his discharge he earned his GED in Emporia and made his home in Eureka.
On November 7, 1948, Tommie was united in marriage to Pauline Jones in Eureka. Tommie was the owner of Eureka Pump and Supply in Eureka. He was an avid golfer, and KU Fan. He was a member of the Midian Shrine of Wichita, Fidelity Masonic Lodge #106 of Eureka, a past President of the Eureka Country Club board of directors, and a member of the Babson College board. He personally installed the greens of the country club golf course. He also sponsored many baseball clubs in Eureka. He contributed scholarships to many young people of the Eureka area, enabling them to attend college.
He is survived by his wife, Pauline of the home; two sons, Bradley K. Grooms of Kansas City, Missouri; and Bruce Grooms of Fredonia; three grandchildren; and one step-sister, Joanie Lewis of Pittsburg, Kansas. He was preceded in death by his parents, and brother, John W. Grooms.
Memorial services will be held at 10:00 A.M., Tuesday, April 19, 2011 at the First United Methodist Church of Eureka with Reverend Kenneth Baker officiating.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that memorials be made to the First United Methodist Church. Contributions may be sent in care of Koup Family Funeral Home at P.O. Box 595, Eureka, KS 67045, which was in charge of service arrangements.
