Sylvester Thaine “Ted” Freeman, of Eureka, died Saturday, February 21, 2004, at Via Christi – St. Francis Medical Center in Wichita, at the age of 88.
He was born on August 12, 1915, in Hamilton, Kansas, the son of William Henry and Elida Mable (Horton) Freeman. His mother and father died when Ted was very young and he was raised in the Severy area by his sister, Beulah. He attended Severy Schools and graduated Salutatorian with the class of 1933. After high school he attended Kansas State University and graduated with a Bachelors degree in Journalism in 1937. After graduation he was employed by the B.F. Goodrich Company in Oklahoma.
In January 1943, Ted enlisted in the United States Army Engineers and served his country with honor during World War II, with duty stations in China, Burma, and India. He was discharged in 1946 with the rank of Staff Sergeant.
On June 18, 1947, Ted was united in marriage to Alice Beal in Eureka. They made their home in Eureka where the couple owned and operated S. T. Freeman’s Management, specializing in B. F. Goodrich tires and General Electric appliances. Ted retired in 1988, after serving the community for 33 years. Alice preceded him in death on July 24, 1987.
On June 14, 1992, Ted was united in marriage to Jane Stiffler Davis in Eureka. The couple made their home in Eureka.
Ted was a member of Christ Lutheran Church, the Eureka Lions Club, Babson Midwest Memorial Foundation, the Greenwood County Fair Association, Greenwood County Council on Aging, V.F.W. Post #2712, American Legion Post #50, Kansas State University Alumni Association, 778th Engineering Petroleum Distribution Association, Greenwood County Historical Society, Eureka Recreational Commission, and the Eureka Chamber of Commerce. He also received the Greenwood County Soil Conservation/Bankers Award in 1985, purchased 4-H livestock at the Greenwood County Fair from 1946 until his retirement, sponsored, coached, and financed summer baseball in the 1960’s and 1970’s, and received recognition from B. F. Goodrich, General Electric, and Kansas State University for his work during the years.
He is survived by his wife, Jane, of the home, one son, Kevin Freeman of Walla Walla, Washington, one daughter, Valerie Meinhardt of Eureka, two step-daughters, Nancy Davis and Sally Esparza, four grandchildren, and one great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Alice, four brothers, and three sisters.
Funeral services will be held at Christ Lutheran Church on Thursday, February 26, 2004, at 2:00 P.M., with Pastors Earl Wall and Tim Carey officiating. Interment will follow in Greenwood Cemetery with military honors being performed by V.F.W. Post #2712.
Memorials have been established in his name to Christ Lutheran Church, Kansas State University Alumni Association, and the Eureka Senior Center. Contributions may be sent in care of the Koup Family Funeral Home, which was in charge of service arrangements.
