Sue Ann Spain of Eureka died on Tuesday, October 15, 2013 at the age of 84.
She was born on November 22, 1928, in Montezuma, Kansas, the daughter of Lee and Ellen (Stonebraker) Richardson. She attended grade school at a local country school. She graduated from Climax High School with the class of 1946. After graduation, Sue moved to Oregon and lived with relatives for about a year.
Upon returning to Eureka, she married Albert Spain on April 8, 1948. To this union, three sons were born: Alan, Craig, and Doug. In 1946, she began working for the Kansas Department of Social and Rehabilitation Services. She retired from this job in 1992. She also worked as a court reporter.
Sue was a member of the Professional Women’s Association and the Christian & Congregational Church of Eureka. In her younger years, she enjoyed bowling and belonged to some bowling leagues. She enjoyed traveling and belonged to the Flintstone Campers Club with Albert. They frequently joined friends on weekend camping outings. After Albert’s death in 1994, Sue traveled with friends to Europe and on cruises.
She is survived by two sons, Alan and wife, Donna Spain of Emporia; and Doug and wife, Betsy Spain of Americus; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; two brothers, Larry Richardson of Eureka; and Leon Richardson of Eureka; and one sister, Patsy Flook of Mesa, Arizona. She was preceded in death by her husband; one son, Craig; and one brother, Melvin.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M., Monday, October 21, 2013 at Koup Family Funeral Home, in Eureka, with Reverend Rhonda Almond of the Christian & Congregational Church officiating. Interment will follow at Greenwood Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that memorials be made to the Christian & Congregational Church. Contributions may be sent in care of Koup Family Funeral Home, P.O. Box 595, Eureka, KS 67045, which was in charge of service arrangements.
