Steven John Schlotterbeck of Burlington, Kansas, died on Tuesday, July 9, 2019 at the Rossville Health and Rehabilitation Center, in Rossville, at the age of 59.
He was born on June 30, 1960, in Eureka, Kansas, the son of Theodore “John” and Christine Olive (Cook) Schlotterbeck. He spent the first 5 years of life in Eureka, Kansas and moved to Emporia, Kansas where he could receive education for Special Needs Students. He completed his education in the Emporia Public Schools receiving a Certificate of Attendance.
Prior to beginning his formal education, Steven and his mother made the trip through the Flint Hills from Emporia to the Institute of Logopedics in Wichita, Kansas. During his time with the Institute Steven learned to use some sign language.
Steven was very active in the Special Olympics where he participated in swimming and the soft-ball throw. His greatest enjoyment was bowling, where he was quite competitive. He really enjoyed beating his nephew Kevin.
During his teen years, Steven attended the First United Methodist Church School where his mother taught a class for Special Needs Children.
After graduation, Steven moved to Hartford, Kansas and lived in a group home and worked at the Sheltered Workshop in Burlington. After 20 years in Hartford, Steven moved to Burlington and lived in a group home there and continued to work at the Sheltered Workshop until the last few years.
Steven is survived by his brother, Delbert James “Jim” and wife, Alberta Stapleford of Watkinsville, Georgia; Jay Cowan, Brother-in-law of Phoenix, Arizona; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, and sister, Janet Cowan.
