Sarah “Irene” Tannahill, of Andover, died on April 19, 2010, at her residence in Andover, at the age of 84.
She was born on April 21, 1925, in Virgil, Kansas, the daughter of John and Mattie (Philips) Thornton. Irene was raised in Virgil and attended local schools. After her schooling, she moved to Kansas City, Missouri and worked at North American Aircraft. Then she moved to San Diego and worked on a naval base.
She later moved backed to Wichita. She worked at Beech Aircraft before moving to Gridley, Kansas moving with her husband’s job throughout the area including Fall River, Cottonwood Falls, Eureka, and Independence, Kansas.
On January 18, 1947, she was united in marriage to Wilbur Tannahill in Wichita, Kansas. Wilbur preceded her in death on January 15, 1985.
Irene was a member of Hamilton United Methodist Church.
She is survived by her son, Earl Tannahill, of Andover; ten grandchildren; thirty one great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; two brothers, Ralph Thornton of Republic, Missouri, and John Thornton of Belle Vista, Arkansas; and one sister, Lucille Malon of Chase County, Kansas. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, one son, Lavern Tannahill; and two-grandchildren.
Graveside services will be held at 2:00 P.M., Friday, April 23, 2010, at Greenwood Cemetery, in Eureka, with Reverend Diana Hill of the First United Methodist Church officiating.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that memorials be made to Ronald McDonald House Charities. Contributions may be sent in care of Koup Family Funeral Home at P.O. Box 595, Eureka, KS 67045, which was in charge of service arrangements.
