Royce Vernal Hilmer, of Eureka, died on January 19, 2005 at Greenwood County Hospital, in Eureka at the age of 80.
He was born on December 29, 1924, in Rising City, Nebraska, the son of Edward M. and Vera (Ruth) Hilmer. He was raised in Rising City and graduate from Rising City High School with the class of 1942. In 1943, he was united in marriage to Doris Bogema. This marriage later ended in divorce.
After graduation, Royce went to work for a phone company and in 1943 enlisted in the United States Army, serving his country with honor and dignity during World War II. After discharge, he worked at various places and in various states on the west coast. In 1946, he was united in marriage to Grace Cotterall, this marriage later ended in divorce. In 1990, Royce moved to Eureka where, along with other odd jobs, he worked as a bartender at the Eureka Country Club.
He was a lifetime member of the American Legion, and attended the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.
He is survived by two sons, Dana Hilmer of Eureka; Edward M. Hilmer of Pocatello, Idaho; five daughters, Karen Stillwell of Gardner; Marianne Hardy of Pocatello, Idaho; Leah Potter of Pocatello, Idaho; Carla Burns of Ruidosa, Mexico; and Lisa Marie Clay of Blackfoot, Idaho; one brother, Wes Hilmer of Washington state; one sister, Ruth Dixon of Rochester, Minnesota; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death his ex-wife, Grace; his parents; one son, Gary; one brother; and one grandson, Royce V. Hilmer, II.
A private memorial service will be held at a later date. Cremation has been effected.
A memorial has been established in his name to the Royce Hilmer Funeral Fund. Contributions may be sent to the funeral home.
