Roy Lester “Pop” Harber died Wednesday, October 7, 2015, at Greenwood County Hospital, Eureka, Kansas at the age of 89.
Pop was born on March 7, 1926, in Neal, Kansas the son of Amos B. and Aleda (Shumard) Harber. He graduated from Neal High School with the class of 1943. After graduation, he was united in marriage to Jeannine Smith in 1948. This marriage later ended in divorce. On December 7, 1968 he was united in marriage to Carolyn Kennedy in Eureka, Kansas. Pop served with dignity and honor in the U.S. Army during World War II from 1944 – 1946. Pop attended barber school in Denver, Colorado. He later owned and operated Pop Harber’s Greenwood Barber Shop in the Greenwood Hotel from April 1951 until he retired in July of 1992.
He was a 60-year member of Masonic Fidelity Lodge 106, a member of Eureka American Legion Post 50, Eureka VFW Post #2712, and a member of the Christian & Congregational Church.
He is survived by his wife, Carolyn of the home; five children: Diane Elliott of Olathe; Michael and wife, Sue Harber of Wichita; Carolyn Marie and husband, Larry Hein of Eureka; Dan and wife, Stephanie Harber of Eureka; and E. J. Harber of Wichita; seventeen grandchildren; twenty-three great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Betty and husband, Thaine Boone of Neal; and Joyce and husband, Marion Johnson of Neal. He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Robert J. “Bob” Harber.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M., Monday October 12, 2015, at the Christian & Congregational Church in Eureka, with Pastor Jim Bell officiating. Interment will follow at Greenwood Cemetery. Visitation hours are set from 5:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M., Sunday at the funeral home.
