Richard Obe “Dick” Francis, of Eureka, died on Monday, September 20, 2004, at the age of 73.
He was born on February 22, 1931, to Joseph T. and Nina L. (Glasgow) Francis in Emporia, Kansas. The family moved to Eureka in 1936, and Dick spent his youth in Eureka. All of Dick’s schooling took place in Eureka graduating from Eureka High School with the class of 1949. He attended Kansas State Teachers College and in 1950, joined the United States Air Force.
Dick was united in marriage to Frances June Lopp on September 25, 1951. To this union were born four children: Joseph, James, Nancy, and William.
He spent his career as a plumbing, heating, and air conditioning contractor. He served as an active member of the Eureka Volunteer Fire Department for many years and was always very interested in his community of Eureka. He was an avid hunter, angler, and outdoorsman. He was a member of VFW Post # 2712, Ducks Unlimited, the National Rifle Association, and the Eureka Lyons Club.
He is survived by Frances J. Chester of Eureka; three sons, Joseph R. Francis of Kansas City; James L. Francis of Emporia; and William P. Francis of Topeka; daughter, Nancy L. Harris of Emporia; grandson, Zachary Harris of Emporia, and two brothers, James H. Francis of Eureka; and David C. Francis of Lincoln, Nebraska. He is preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Joseph W. Francis and Gene W. Francis.
Memorial services will be held at 10:30 A.M., Saturday, October 9, 2004, at Koup Family Funeral Home, Eureka, with Reverend Diana Hill of the First United Methodist Church officiating. Inurnment will follow in Greenwood Cemetery.
