Rena “Maxine” Holmes, of Eureka, died on Wednesday, January 16, 2008 at Greenwood County Hospital, in Eureka, at the age of 90.

She was born on March 13, 1917, in Spearville, Kansas, the daughter of Floyd and Marguerite (Wiedower) Imel. She was raised in Spearville and graduated from Spearville High School with the class of 1935.

On August 28, 1947, she was united in marriage to Herschel E. Holmes in Newton. They made their home in Wichita, Fall River, and later Eureka.

After her schooling, she worked for the Army Air Force, Boy Scouts of America, General Metals, and the Butler County Community College Outreach Center in Eureka, which she operated herself for many years. She also owned and operated Maxine’s Country Cupboard in Fall River for several years. She retired in 1989. Herschel preceded her in death on April 18, 1999.

She was a Methodist, and past Worthy Matron of the Order of the Eastern Star.

Maxine is survived by one son, Richard Holmes of The Villages, Florida; one daughter, Sanda Wenz of Eastlake, Ohio; seven grandchildren; sixteen great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Ethel Miller of Newton; and Helen Nelson of Turon. She was preceded in death by her parents, and husband, Herschel.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 A.M., Saturday, January 19, 2008, at Koup Family Funeral Home, in Eureka. A visitation will be held from 5:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M., on Friday, at the funeral home. A private family inurnment will take place at a later date.
