Raymond Murl (Ray) Valentine
Raymond Murl (Ray) Valentine, age 80 of Eureka, Kansas passed away Sunday morning October 13, 2013 at Greenwood County Hospital surrounded by his loving family. Born October 16, 1932 in Iola, Kansas, he was the son of the late Vernon and Neita Valentine.
Ray grew up in the Iola area where he attended schools graduating in 1951. He also attended Allen County Junior College where he played football. He worked at O.A. Sutton in Wichita, Kansas until 1952, and then served in the United State Army from 1953 to 1955 at Fort Bliss, Texas as a Honor Guard and in Rapid City, South Dakota. After serving in the military Ray went to radio and television school in Kansas City and eventually became the owner and operator of Valentine Automatic Coin Equipment, an amusement and vending business in Eureka. Ray was also a 30 year employee of the U.S. Postal Service as a rural mail carrier until retiring in 1999.
Ray married his high school sweetheart, Joanne Fox on September 21, 1952 in Iola, Kansas. Recently Ray and Joanne celebrated their 61st wedding anniversary. Ray is a member of the Christian and Congregation Church and the Masonic Fidelity Lodge #106 both in Eureka. Ray enjoyed his family and attending his grandchildren’s various school and sporting activities. He also enjoyed golfing, bowling, billiards, and fishing with his friends and family.
He is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Joanne; along with four children; Steve Valentine of Eureka, Mark and (Janet) Valentine of Eureka; Pam and (Rick) Bean of Topeka, Kansas; and Scott and (Julie) Valentine of El Dorado, Kansas; 10 grandchildren, Lucas Valentine, Nicholas (Misti) Valentine, Sunny (Derek) Griswold; Kalyn Valentine; Tyler Bean, Jana (James) Barnaby, Toree Bean, Emily Valentine, Shelby Valentine, and Zoee Valentine; 3 step-grandchildren, Evan, Ty and Macy; 5 great-grandchildren; and many other loving nieces, nephews and relatives. Surviving brother Marvin Valentine of Iola. Ray was preceded in death by his parents, brothers, Virgil, Bill, Jim and Bobby Valentine, daughter-in-law Kimberly Valentine and his grandson Anthony Valentine.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M. Wednesday, October 16, 2013 at Koup Family Funeral with Pastor Rhonda Almond and Mr. Jayme A. Koup officiating. Burial will follow in Greenwood Cemetery, Eureka, Kansas.
Memorial donations may be made to the Christian and Congregational Church or the Greenwood County Cancer Support Group and in left in care of Koup Family Funeral Home at P.O. Box 595, Eureka, Kansas 67045 which were in charge of service arrangements.
