Phillip Jay Walford, of Eureka, died on Saturday, January 29, 2005, at Greenwood County Hospital, in Eureka, at the age 83.
He was born on November 19, 1921, in Climax, Kansas, the son of Earl J. and Dortha (McCombs) Walford. He was raised in rural Eureka and attended local schools. After graduation, Phillip served his country with honor and dignity, in the United States Army during World War II, in the European theater. He was wounded in combat, for which he was awarded the Purple Heart, and was captured and held in a German prisoner of war camp.
On June 22, 1947, Phillip was united in marriage to Alma A. Wade, in Eureka, where they made their home. After he was discharged, he worked for Bush & Parks Motors until he started Eureka Termite Control in the early 1960’s. In addition to the pest control business, he raised cattle, until his retirement in the mid 1980’s.
He attended the First United Methodist Church of Eureka, and was a Life Member of the Disabled American Veterans.
Phillip is survived by his wife, Alma; one daughter and son-in-law, Evelyn and Dean Oblander of Derby; one grandson and granddaughter-in-law, Jeff and Sherry Oblander of Belle Plaine; one granddaughter and grandson-in-law, Denise and Lee Gage of Mulvane; three great-grandsons, Garrett, Kyle, and John; three great-granddaughters, Jenna, Lacie, and Stephanie; one great-great-granddaughter, Melinda, one brother, Charles Joe Walford of El Dorado, and two sisters, Frances Gardner of McAllen, Texas, and Alta Bruce of Grand Island, Nebraska. He was preceded in death by his parents and four brothers.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M., Wednesday, February 2, 2005, at Koup Family Funeral Home, with Reverend Diana Hill officiating. Interment will follow in Greenwood Cemetery.
A memorial has been established in his name with the Greenwood County Hospital. Contributions may be sent in care of the funeral home.
