Phillip Flock

Phillip Wayne Flock of Madison, KS, died peacefully at his home with his wife of 51 years by his side, on March 3, 2021, at the age of 73.
Phillip was born May 4, 1947, in Eureka, KS, the son of Virgil Wayne and Phyllis Orvilla (Totland) Flock. He was raised in Greenwood County, graduating 8th grade from the Dunlap country school, Eureka High School in 1965, and Butler County Community College with an associate degree in Welding. In May 1968, Phillip joined the Army National Guard and served active duty with the 69th Infantry Brigade from May 1968 thru August 1969 at Fort Carson, Colorado. He met his future wife, Carol Ann Storrer through 4-H and they were united in marriage February 15, 1970. They lived up the River Road in the Norwegian community and in Eureka for a short time, until 1980 when they purchased Carol Ann’s family farm, where they continue to live. Phillip loved his family and was very proud of his Norwegian heritage. Every Christmas Eve the family would honor the long tradition of eating Lefse and Lutefish.
Early in his career Phillip worked for Hesston Manufacturing, Stephens Dairy, as a ranch hand for his aunt Gladys Totland, and then for National Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) where he served by “Helping People Help the Land”. He continued his career at NRCS from 1976-2009 when he retired. He retired to full time ranching which was his love and passion. He had a life-long love for the Flint Hills and livestock. He spent his entire life being a wonderful steward of the land and livestock God blessed him with. Phillip worked tirelessly to improve his home place and planting all the pasture ground back to native grass. Phillip and Carol Ann won the Farm Family of the Year in 2008. As busy as he was, Phillip never missed his girls or grandchildren’s’ activities – 4-H, school, and sports. He enjoyed attending K-State Football games and many bowl games. Phillip and Carol Ann didn’t miss a football game while their daughters attended KSU.
He was a Greenwood County Farm Bureau Member and Board member; Kansas Farm Bureau member, serving on several statewide committees; KLA member; past Greenwood County Cattlemen’s President; Eureka Jaycees; Young Farmers and Ranchers; and Greenwood County Fair Board. He was an Upper Fall River 4-H member as a young man and continued to support 4-H with his girls and grandchildren’s’ involvement. Phillip was raised in the Lutheran Church in Eureka, and as an adult was a member of the Central Christian Church of Madison, KS, where he served as a Deacon.
Phillip is survived by his wife, Carol Ann of the home; daughters: Erin and husband, Reece Laurie of Ottawa, KS; and Joanna and husband, Darin Mason of Hamilton, KS; four grandchildren: Wayne Laurie, Ryan Laurie, Lydia Mason, and Elias Mason; and great-granddaughter, Elizabeth Laurie. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Graveside services will be held at 2:00 P.M., Monday, March 8, 2021 at Upper Fall River Cemetery, with Pastor Tim Meyer of the Christ Lutheran Church, Eureka officiating. The family invites everyone to bring a lawn chair as needed. Visitation hours are set from 1:00 P.M. to 3:00 P.M., Sunday at the funeral home. Masks should be worn, and social distancing observed.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to Hand in Hand Hospice or to the Greenwood County 4-H Foundation for their new beef barn.
