Philip Gardiner Evans, Jr., 81, passed away in the morning of May 5, 2013 surrounded by family. “Phil” was born on September 28, 1931, in Chicago, Illinois. He was a graduate of Shawnee Mission High School and Oklahoma A&M College (now Oklahoma State University), where he was a proud member of Beta Theta Pi fraternity, and Army ROTC.

Phil had a distinguished career as Army Provost Marshall, cattleman, banker, and most recently President of EFI, Inc. As President of Citizens National Bank in Eureka, he built a new bank facility on Main Street. He also expanded the bank from a single location to multiple branches in Southeast Kansas, including Howard, Moline, and Toronto. Phil also served as President of the Independent Banker’s Association for the State of Kansas.

Outside of work, he was an active member of the Lions Club, the Greenwood County Republicans, the American Legion, and a lifetime member of the NRA. Phil was the driving force in establishing Quarter Horse racing at the Eureka Downs, in Eureka, KS.
Phil was a cowboy as a profession and at heart. His loves included spending time with his family-especially his children and grandchildren, cheering for the Oklahoma State University Cowboys, caring for animals, and being a servant to God.

Phil was preceded in death by his parents, Philip G. and Edna Evans, and sister, Phyllis Evans Walch. He is survived by his devoted wife, Trudy, five children: Karen and husband, Michael Cohen, Leslie and husband, Richard English, Stacy and husband, Kelly Maclaskey, Bryan and wife, Janet Evans, and Arian Evans; his grandchildren: Scott and wife, Rhonda Maclaskey, Jason and wife, Lauren Maclaskey, Sean and wife, Brooke Maclaskey, David and wife, Becky English, Alan and wife, Britney English, Eric English, Austin and wife, Lynee English, Evan Cohen, Shelby Cohen, Blair Evans, Paige Evans, Layne Evans, and Philip Walker Evans; and his great-grandchild, Weston Maclaskey.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 P.M., Wednesday, May 8, 2013 at Christ Lutheran Church, Eureka, with Nancy Mitchell, Interim Pastor officiating. Interment will follow at Greenwood Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that memorials be made to the Greenwood County Hospital or to the Kansas Humane Society. Contributions may be sent in care of Koup Family Funeral Home, P.O. Box 595, Eureka, KS 67045, which was in charge of service arrangements.
