Perry McColpin was born October 2, 1945, in Eureka, Kansas, the son of Dwight and Dora (McKee) McColpin.
When he was 2 years old, his family moved to Tustin, California, where his mother Dora helped her father run a café there. Perry grew up in Tustin until age 16, when he came back to Eureka to finish High School. Aunt Mary Boren drove out to Tustin to pick Perry up and bring him back to Eureka. Perry drove back and learned how to drive on the return trip. Perry then lived with Aunt Mary and Buster Boren during his Junior and Senior High School years. He graduated from Eureka High with the class of 1963.
After graduation, Perry moved to New Jersey for awhile to work at “Uncle Babe’s” gas station. It was while there that he bought his first car, and incidentally not long after that he moved to Florida to attend college. He desired to become an attorney, but he had another call from an uncle. This time, “Uncle Sam” was calling Perry to join the United States Army. Perry was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1965. He soon found himself in Vietnam. He served in the Iron Triangle Theater and was wounded in January of 1967. He received a purple heart for his service. He then returned home to Tustin, California and later Newport Beach.
He married Nancy in April 1982. In the following years their family moved around and finally settled in a home near Table Rock Lake, Missouri, where Perry enjoyed fishing on the lake. He also enjoyed trips back to Greenwood County to hunt and fish and visit Aunt Mary. Perry and Nancy had recently sold their Ozark home and moved to Texas.
Perry died on Sunday, February 10, 2008 at the Veterans Hospital in Dallas, Texas.
He is survived by his wife, Nancy; three step-children, Paul, Shawn and Kelly; four sisters, Kim, Bennye Janie and Eileen; Aunt Mary Boren; numerous cousins and friends.
Graveside services will be 3:00 P.M., Saturday, February 16, 2008 at Greenwood Cemetery, in Eureka, with Pastor Alan Hunter officiating.
