Paul Charles Hibbard, 88, of Toronto, Kansas, died Sunday, January 11, 2004, at the Meadowlark Hills Retirement Community in Manhattan.

Born August 3, 1915, he was the son of Charles and Evie (Johnson) Hibbard, who farmed in southeastern Greenwood County, near Toronto.

Paul attended the Triumph School for most of his grade school years, except for the sixth grade when his family lived in Lawrence. He graduated from Fall River High School in 1933. After attending the University of Kansas, Paul returned to his family’s farm.

Drafted into the Army in 1942, Paul served as an anti-aircraft gunnery trainer at Camp Calhun and Death Valley in California during most of the war effort.

On April 27, 1943, Paul married Bernita Woodside in Virgil, Kansas. Paul and Bernita returned to Toronto area after the war to raise their family on the family’s farm.

Prior to serving as a Greenwood County Commissioner, he served on the Toronto School Board, Pleasant Grove Township Board and Greenwood County Republican Central Committee. He was a leader in several agricultural organizations, including the Greenwood County Cattlemen’s Association and Greenwood County Farm Bureau.

He was an active life-time member of the Toronto United Methodist Church,
where he taught Sunday School and held several leadership positions. He was a longtime project and community leader for the Fancy Mustangs 4-H Club and served several years on the Greenwood County Fair Board.

Paul was a member of Woodson Masonic Lodge #121 and the Golden Star Chapter #173 Order of Eastern Star.

In 1971, Paul and Bernita were inducted into the Kansas Master Farmers and Master Homemakers.

He is survived by a son Larry and his wife Cindy of Toronto, a son Gordon and his wife Karen of Manhattan, a daughter Mary Alice McNitt and her husband Gordon of Toronto, seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Bernita preceded him in death on April 19, 2001.

Family visitation will be held between 6-8 p.m. on Wednesday, January 14, at the Koup Funeral Home in Eureka. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, January 15, at the Toronto United Methodist Church with the Reverend Jim Uhlig officiating. Interment will follow at the Toronto Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorials have been established with the Toronto United Methodist Church and the Kansas 4-H Foundation.
