Park Wright Carter of Eureka, died on June 3, 2011 at Greenwood County Hospital at the age of 91.
He was born on April 11, 1920, the son of Washington Herbert and Jennie Louise (Black) Carter. Park was raised in Eureka and attended local schools graduating in 1938. When he was fourteen his father taught him how to repair watches and clocks. After his schooling he was drafted into the Army Air Corps, being stationed in India during WWII serving his country with honor and dignity. When Park returned to Eureka he resumed working at Carter’s Jewelry with his father. Later he moved to Peoria, Illinois for nine months while he went to school at the Bradley Horological Institute learning how to engrave and make jewelry. He worked up until his retirement in 1987.
On July 25, 1948 he was united in marriage to Arleta F. Denner in Eureka, Kansas. They made their home in Eureka.
Park was a member of the Christian and Congregational Church, a charter member of the Greenwood County Wildlife Club and the Greenwood County Historical Society. He volunteered at the Greenwood County Museum and in the past wrote a history column for the Eureka Herald.
He is survived by his daughters, Rosanne Carter and husband, Tom Elliott of Wichita; and Jeanette Carter of Eureka. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, and son, Warner Carter, one brother, and one sister.
Memorial services will be held at 10:00 A.M., Monday, June 27, 2011, at Christian & Congregational Church with Reverend Rhonda Almond officiating. Inurnment will follow at Greenwood Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers memorials have been established in his name to the Christian & Congregational Church or the Greenwood County Historical Society. Contributions may be sent in care of Koup Family Funeral Home at P.O. Box 595, Eureka, KS 67045, which was in charge of service arrangements.
