Oscar “Gerald” Makemson, formerly of Eureka, died on Sunday, October 27, 2013, in Burlington, North Carolina at the age of 77.

Gerald was born on February 14, 1936, in Linn County, Kansas, the son of Oscar and Adeline Makemson. He served in the U.S. Army after high school, and then he worked in the telephone industry for more than 30 years, before retiring in the early 1990s. He was an avid Kansas Jayhawk fan, and during his time in Eureka was active in the high school’s athletic booster club.
Gerald is survived by a son, Harlen of Elon, North Carolina; brother, Frank of Saint Paul, Kansas; and one grandson, Dan. He was preceded in death by his wife, Betty Miles Makemson; his parents; and two sisters. He also had a son from a previous marriage, Jerry Alan.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 A.M., Saturday, November 2, 2013 at Greenwood Cemetery with Reverend Kenneth Baker of the First United Methodist Church officiating. Visitation hours are set from 5:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M., Friday, at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers or cards, the community is asked to consider making a donation to the Betty and Gerald Makemson Scholarship Fund. Contributions may be sent in care of Koup Family Funeral Home, P.O. Box 595, Eureka, KS 67045, which was in charge of service arrangements.
