Opal Myrtle Gibson, of Eureka, died at the Greenwood County Hospital on Thursday, September 8, 2005, at the age of 89.

She was born in Greenwood County, Kansas on December 3, 1915, the daughter of George Walter and Cora (Walker) Wright. She was raised in southern Greenwood County and attended rural schools. After her schooling she worked for the M. A. Allen family in Eureka, until her marriage to Hubert Leonard Gibson Sr. on October 18, 1945. She and Hubert made their home in Eureka where Opal was a homemaker. In the late 1960’s, she began her career as a cook at the Eureka High School cafeteria. Then in the early 1970’s, she took her cooking skills to the Lyndon Nursing Home and later at Prairie Hills Nursing Home. Hubert preceded her in death on April 8, 1979. She retired from cooking in the mid 1980’s. After her retirement Opal cared for several of the area’s elderly residents until her own health failed.

Opal was a member of the Christian Church and the Church of Christ both of Eureka, the EHU, American Legion Auxiliary, VFW Auxiliary, Greenwood County Hospital Auxiliary, and was a 4-H leader and an avid gardener.

She is survived by two sons, Junior Gibson and Dean Gibson both of Eureka, two daughters, Linda Dauber of Eureka, and Jean Johnson of Milton, Kansas, nine grandchildren, one step-grandchild, fourteen great-grandchildren, and two brothers, Karl Wright and Glen Wright both of Eureka. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, one great-grandchild, and three brothers.

Visitation hours will be from 5:00 until 7:00 P.M. on Friday evening. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 A.M., Saturday, September 10, 2005, at Koup Family Funeral Home with Pastor Alan Hunter of the Jefferson Street Baptist Church officiating. Interment will follow in Greenwood Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers the family requests that memorials be made in her name to the Medicalodge Activity Fund or the Greenwood County Hospital Auxiliary. Contributions may be sent in care of the funeral home.
