Normalie Bobbitt, 80, of Eureka, died Tuesday, January 4, 2005 in Eureka Medicalodge.
She was born in Eureka, Kansas on May 19, 1924, the daughter of R.B. and Ethel Benson Brown. On June 15, 1924 she was baptized in Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Eureka and until the last two years was an active member of the Altar Society.
The church was to become an important and active part of Normalie’s entire life. She attended parochial school her first school years in Pawhuska, Oklahoma and served as a gray lady at Fort Riley during the war years. Later she was a pink lady at St. Francis Hospital in Wichita.
On June 24, 1947, Normalie Brown and Eddie Bobbitt were married in Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Eureka, Kansas with Fr. LeRoy Downs officiating. On Sunday, June 29, 1997, the couple celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with a reception in the Parish Hall.
Normalie received the remainder of her education in Eureka Schools and graduated with the class of 1942. She later worked at Beech Aircraft Company during the war years and as an insurance secretary until her retirement.
During the years Normalie & Eddie lived and worked in Wichita, they traveled extensively in all 50 states, 12 European countries, Canada, Mexico, Cuba, and Great Britain. The camaraderie and fellowship of Eddie’s yearly army reunions was a particular highlight for Normalie, especially the later years, when her nephew Tim Brown was their driver. She always attended church whenever she traveled away from home.
Normalie was a charter member of the Greenwood County Historical Society and also a member of the Yates Center Chapter of the Kansas Oldtime Fiddlers, Pickers, & Singers. Her love for this style of music began when she was young and attended neighborhood dances with her father “Brownie”, who played the saxophone.
Normalie is survived by her brother Robert D. Brown of Wichita, and his children whom she was particularly close to, Patty, Teresa, Kelly, Tim, Terry, and several other nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, and one nephew, Mike Brown.
