Murray Shobe French, of Eureka, died on Monday, February 23, 2009, at Greenwood County Hospital, in Eureka, at the age of 89.
He was born on December 5, 1919, in Fall River township, the son of James Garfield and Mamie (Shobe) French. He was raised in the Climax area and graduated from Climax High School with the class of 1939. After his schooling, he farmed and ranched, never living farther than a mile from his birthplace.
On May 21, 1942, Murray was united in marriage to Mary Lois Burke in Eureka. They made their home in rural Climax.
He was active in the Greenwood County Cattlemen’s Association, a member of the Greenwood County Fair Association, the American Quarter Horse Association, Climax Masonic Lodge #411, and the Christian & Congregational Church.
Murray is survived by his wife, Lois, of the home; numerous nephews and nieces including Larry and Danny French, both of Eureka; one brother, Dean French of Eureka; and three sisters, Aileen Lawson of Hutchinson; Gladys Forcum of Hutchinson; and Mary Sowder of Toronto. He was preceded in death by his parents, and one brother.
Graveside services will be held at 2:00 P.M., Friday, February 27, 2009, at Greenwood Cemetery, in Eureka, with Pastor Alan Hunter of the Jefferson Street Baptist Church officiating. A visitation will be held from 5:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M., Thursday, at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that memorials be made to Home Health Care of Greenwood County. Contributions may be sent in care of Koup Family Funeral Home at P.O. Box 595, Eureka, KS 67045, which was in charge of service arrangements.
