Mildred “Millie” Laverne (Long) Hollis of Hamilton, Kansas died on December 23, 2003, at Medicalodge of Eureka at the age of 90.
She was born on January 1, 1913 in Portland, Oregon the daughter of John Long and Mabel (Coulter) Long. She was raised in the Reece area and attended Reece High School. Mildred loved basketball and played on the high school basketball team.
On February 8, 1931, she married Jay Hollis at the Presbyterian Manse in Reece, Kansas. They made their home in Hamilton, but later moved to Utica, Kansas. In 1935 they returned to Hamilton where they farmed. The district they lived in was called Ruweda and Mildred reported the Ruweda news for the Eureka Herald from 1941 until 1968.
Mildred was a homemaker and a member of the Hamilton Baptist Church. She also loved quilting, an art which she had learned as a young girl.
She is survived by her husband Jay, two sons, Marvin Hollis of Hamilton and Ralph Hollis of Greenville, Texas, four daughters; Rosalie Garrison of Eureka, Annie Kepley of Humboldt, Nellie Taylor of Hamilton, and Frances Brewer of Hermitage, Missouri, two brothers; Howard Long of El Dorado and Jesse Long of Grain Valley, Missouri, one sister Ella Powell of Topeka, twenty-two grandchildren, sixteen great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren and eighteen step-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, four brothers and one sister.
Funeral services were held at 2:00 P.M., Saturday, December 27, 2003, at Koup Family Funeral Home with Reverend Leon Wise of the Hamilton Baptist Church officiating. Internment followed in Janesville Cemetery, Hamilton, Kansas.
