Melvin Retsel Sherman of Hamilton died on November 16, 2004, at his residence in Hamilton, at the age of 76.
He was born on March 17, 1928, in Neal, the son of Willie and Dona Mae (Watts) Sherman. He was raised in the Hamilton area and attended Hamilton schools. After his schooling, Melvin joined the United States Army and served his country with honor and dignity during the Korean Conflict.
On December 18, 1949, Melvin was united in marriage to Lola J. Crabtree in Eureka. On September 10, 2000, Lola preceded him in death. On May 6, 2002, Melvin and Era Pinkerton were united in marriage in New Hope, Arkansas. They made their home in Hamilton.
Melvin worked the oil fields most of his life as a roustabout and rig operator. He started his own business with his son Melvin called, Oil Patch Well Service working together for seventeen years. Melvin retired in 1991.
He is survived by his wife, Era; one son, Melvin Sherman, of Hamilton; two daughters, Becky Linden of Hamilton; and Dianna Castle, of Hamilton; eight grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren; and one sister, Gladys Williams of Madison. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Lola; son, Gerald; daughter, Betty Kay; two brothers; one sister; and two grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 1:30 P.M., Friday, November 19, 2004, at the United Methodist Church of Hamilton, with Pastor Larry Evans of the Neal Evangelical Free Church officiating.
