Melvin L. Richardson, of El Dorado, formerly of Eureka, died on August 28, 2009, at his home at the age of 73.
He was born on September 2, 1935 in rural Greenwood County, the son of Lee Roy and Mary Ellen (Stonebraker) Richardson. Melvin attended local schools and graduated from Climax High School. After his schooling Melvin worked as a farmer/rancher and rode and trained race horses. He ran several of his own businesses in and around Eureka and El Dorado until his health forced him to retire.
On May 7, 1964 he was united in marriage to Joyce Elliott in Eureka, Kansas. They made their home in Eureka.
He is survived by his wife, Joyce of the home; two sons, Kevin Hensley of Thousand Oaks, California; and Brent Hensley of Encinitas, California; one daughter, Cristy Howard of Eureka; two brothers, Leon Richardson of Eureka; and Larry Richardson of Eureka; two sisters, Sue Ann Spain of Eureka; and Patsy Flook of Sun City, Arizona; seven grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M., Wednesday, September 2, 2009, at Koup Family Funeral Home with Pastor Alan Hunter of the Jefferson Street Baptist Church officiating. Interment will follow in Greenwood Cemetery.
A memorial has been established in his name to the Greenwood County 4-H Foundation. Contributions may be sent in care of Koup Family Funeral Home at P.O. Box 595, Eureka, KS 67045, which was in charge of service arrangements.
