Melba Ruth Pugh, of Eureka, died on Saturday, March 20, 2010, at Presbyterian Manor in Emporia, at the age of 84.
She was born on August 8, 1925, in Bachelor Township, the daughter of Clyde E. and Gladys C. (Nelson) Williams. She was raised in Greenwood County and attended Neal Grade School. On September 4, 1943, she was united in marriage to Daryl Sherman Pugh, in Yates Center. They made their home in Quincy. Melba and Daryl ran Pugh’s Grocery Store in Quincy. Later they farmed in the Quincy-Toronto area, and Melba worked in the Hamilton school cafeteria. She retired in 1980.
Melba was a skilled seamstress and cook, and an avid quilter. She loved gardening, canning, and generally being outside. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, and the Order of the Eastern Star. She was a member of the Methodist Church of Quincy.
She is survived by her daughter, Judith and husband, Matthew Owen of Hamilton; one grandson, Clay Owen; four brothers, Bob Williams of Eureka; Bill Williams of Eureka; Grover Williams of Henderson, Nevada; and Melvin Williams of Stroud, Oklahoma; four sisters, Delores Ashlock of Eureka; Erma Sherman of Eureka; Marjorie Whitehall of Washington; and Sue Laughlin of Oklahoma. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Daryl, one brother, Cecil, and one sister, Maxine Wilson.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M., Wednesday, March 24, 2010, at Koup Family Funeral Home, in Eureka, with Reverend Diana Hill of the First United Methodist Church officiating. Interment will follow in Quincy Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that memorials be made to the Alzheimer’s Association. Contributions may be sent in care of Koup Family Funeral Home at P.O. Box 595, Eureka, KS 67045, which was in charge of service arrangements.
