Melba Jean Fechter of Hamilton, died on Wednesday, October 3, 2012 at Greenwood County Hospital in Eureka, at the age of 82.

She was born on December 4, 1929, in Quincy, the daughter of Theodore Allen and Inza (Hawkins) Ward. She was rasied in Quincy and graduated from Quincy High School. After graduation she moved to Wichita to attend Wichita Business School.

On December 4, 1948, Melba was united in marriage to Roy Cleatus Fechter in Eureka. They made their home in rural Hamilton, where they lived ever since. Melba opened and ran Melba’s Upholstery for 50+ years. Roy preceded her in death on June 17, 2007.

She is survived by one son, Danny and wife, Ruth Fechter of El Dorado; one daughter, Cindy and husband, Mike McCartney of El Dorado; three grandchildren: Amber and husband, Tad McLaren of Cottonwood Falls; Danna and husband, Scott Lee of Augusta; and Michael and husband, Nic Marin of Barnsdall, Oklahoma; nine great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews; and one sister, Zelda Milner of Ellinwood. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and brother, William Thomas Ward.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 A.M., Monday, October 8, 2012 at Koup Family Funeral Home, in Eureka with Pastor Mark Demas of the Hamilton United Methodist Church officiating. Interment will follow at Janesville Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that memorials be made to Greenwood County Hospital, Hamilton United Methodist Church, or Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice. Contributions may be sent in care of Koup Family Funeral Home at P.O. Box 595, Eureka, KS 67045, which was in charge of service arrangements.
