Maxine L. Russell
Maxine Lena Russell of Eureka, died on Sunday, April 22, 2012, at Greenwood County Hospital, in Eureka, at the age of 83.
She was born on December 10, 1928, in Harper, Kansas, the daughter of Fred and Fannie Marie (Stanfield) Hamm. She was raised in Harper and Yates Center, graduating from Yates Center High School. She later attended Emporia State Teacher’s College for six summers and graduated with a teaching certificate. She taught school in Reece and country schools near Yates Center and Wichita.
On April 20, 1952, Maxine was united in marriage to John Russell in Yates Center. They made their home in Eureka. Maxine was primarily a homemaker and loving mother. She helped with the farming, was active as a 4-H sewing and cooking leader, was a member of the United Methodist Women, and often served on the election board. Maxine was a caring, unselfish person who always put others needs before her own.
She is survived by her husband, John of the home; five children, Kathy Barr of Lebo; Leroy Russell of Auburn; Larry Russell of Emporia; Cindy Russell of Parsons; and Nancy Clites of El Dorado; seven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and one brother, Fred Hamm of Yuma, Arizona. She was preceded in death by her parents, brothers, Don and Johnny, and sister, Doris.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M., Thursday, April 26, 2012 at Koup Family Funeral Home, in Eureka with Reverend Kenneth A. Baker of the First United Methodist Church officiating. Interment will follow at Greenwood Cemetery. A visitation will be held from 5:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M., Wednesday, at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that memorials be made to the First United Methodist Church or to the DeMolay Greenwood Chapter. Contributions may be sent in care of Koup Family Funeral Home at P.O. Box 595, Eureka, KS 67045, which is in charge of service arrangements.
