Maxcine W. Griggs, of Eureka, died at the Greenwood County Hospital on Saturday, May 24, 2003, at the age of 89,

She was born in Parsons, Kansas on January 29, 1914, the daughter of Frank and Ora (Karas) Winkler. Maxcine was raised in Parsons and graduated from Parsons High School with the class of 1932. In that same year she had the honor of serving as Miss Parsons and competing in the Miss Kansas Contest.

On December 25, 1933 she was united in marriage to Kenneth Earl Griggs in El Dorado, Kansas. In 1936 they moved to Eureka and purchased the Griggs Shoe Store. They operated the store until 1968. Maxcine then began working for Zenishek’s and the Red Owl. She retired from the retail business in 1996. Kenneth preceded her in death on June 27, 1997.

She was a member of the Christian-Congregational Church and loved to fish and work in her flower garden.

Maxcine is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Susan and Danny Hayes of Eureka, three grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, one son, Ken Ronald, and one sister.

Graveside services and interment will be held in Memorial Lawn Cemetery in Parsons, at 11:00 A.M., Wednesday, May 28, 2003, with Pastor Chuck Hayes of the Fellowship Baptist Church of Emporia officiating.

A memorial has been established in her name to the Whitehead Outdoor Classroom at Marshall Elementary Grade School. Contributions may be sent in care of the Koup Family Funeral Home which was in charge of service arrangements.
