Virginia Newkirk, of Eureka, died at Medicalodge of Eureka on Sunday, December 22, 2002, at the age of 93.
She was born on November 29, 1909, in Centralia, Oklahoma, the daughter of Elmer Earl and Mary Lucina (Anderson) Conkright. She was raised in Coffeyville, Kansas and graduated from Coffeyville High School with the class of 1928. In 1929 she received her normal teacher training at Pittsburg State Teachers College in Pittsburg, Kansas. Virginia then taught 3rd and 4th grade at Havana and Elk City, Kansas.
On January 17, 1931, she was united in marriage to A. Cecil “Pete” Newkirk in Fredonia. They made their home in the rural Elk City area. In 1961 Virginia received her Bachelors Degree in teaching from Pittsburg State Teachers College. In 1967 the family moved to Sterling, Kansas, where Virginia taught 4th grade in the Nickerson school district. Pete preceded her in death in February of 1983. In 1993 she moved to Eureka to make her home.
Virginia was a member of the New Life Assembly of God Church of Eureka, the Greenwood County Retired Teachers Association, the N.E.A., and the K.N.E.A.
She is survived by two sons, Allan C. Newkirk of Independence, Kansas and James L. Newkirk of Pampa, Texas, two daughters, Mary Ann Broyles of Eureka, and Sara Ross of Denison, Texas, 10 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, two brothers, and one sister.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Friday, December 27, 2002, at the New Life Assembly of God Church of Eureka with Pastor Chris Anderson officiating. Graveside services and interment will be held at 2:30 p.m. at the Oak Hill Cemetery, in Elk City, Kansas.
Memorials have been established in her name with the New Life Assembly of God Church of Eureka and the Harry Hynes Hospice of Wichita. Contributions may be sent in care of the Koup Family Funeral Home, P.O. Box 595, Eureka, Kansas 67045, which was in charge of service arrangements.
