Mary Lucia Mariani
Mary Mariani, D.D.S., passed away on Friday, April 11, 2014, following a brief illness. Dr. Mariani was born January 19, 1962, in Eureka, Kansas, the third of six children born to Marlene (Adams) and Ted Mariani.
After graduating from Eureka High School, she attended Benedictine College in Atchison,
Kansas. In 1988, Dr. Mariani earned her Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from the University of
Missouri, School of Dentistry in Kansas City, Missouri.
Dr. Mariani served as Community Health Care Inc.’s (CHC) Dental Director since March 1999. Prior to assuming the Directorship, she worked as CHC staff dentist for ten years, where she could often be heard singing songs to the children she treated. Since 1992, Dr. Mariani has served as the Adjunct Faculty Member of the University of Iowa, College of Dentistry in the Department of Preventive and Community Dentistry, teaching senior dental students and pediatric residents in the CHC clinic. She also mentored prospective dental students. Dr. Mariani had a deep compassion for others which was evidenced in her humanitarian efforts. In 1997, she completed the Armed Forces Institute and Pathology Forensic Dental Training, and in September of 2005, joined the DMORT team in New Orleans to provide post mortem dental identification for some of the victims of Hurricane Katrina. Recently, Dr. Mariani has been serving as Dental Consultant to the Scott County Medical Examiner’s Office.
Dr. Mariani has participated in providing free dentistry to children at the Iowa Mission of Mercy since its 2008, inception as part of a statewide effort by the Iowa Dental Foundation to help the underserved population of Iowa attain dental care. Dr. Mariani’s professional memberships included the American Dental Association, Iowa Dental Association (President 2013-present), Iowa Dental Foundation (President 2012), Davenport District Dental Association (President 2006), Scott County Dental Society (President 2001), Iowa State Dental Identification Team, Disaster Mortuary Operation Response Team Region VII, Iowa Dental Study Club, and the American Society of Forensic Odontology. Dr. Mariani was devoted to the Catholic Church, and was a long standing member of PEO.
Mary’s passion was her love of the practice of dentistry and her patients, devotion to organized dentistry, and affections for her family. Those left to honor her memory are her parents, sisters, Gina Marshall, Libbi Mariani-Pitalo (Mike), Cecilia Mariani, and Catherine Bettis (Troy), and brother, Richard Mariani, (Bobbi), along with numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts, uncle, and close personal friends.
Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10:00 A.M., Wednesday, April 16, 2014 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church with Father Steve Gronert officiating. Rosary 9:15 A.M. Interment will follow at Greenwood Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Oaks Marme Catholic Worker, Eureka Public Library or the Iowa Dental Foundation and left in care of Koup Family Funeral Home P.O. Box 595, Eureka, Kansas 67045 which were in charge of service arrangements.
