Mary Cathryn Kurtz of Eureka, died on Saturday, March 14, 2015, at her home near Eureka, at the age of 68.

She was born on January 19, 1947, near LeRoy, Kansas, the daughter of Chester and Helen Eugena (Elder) Sauder. She was raised in LeRoy until the age of 12 and moved to Eureka when her father passed away. She graduated from Eureka High School with the class of 1965. After high school, she attended Saint Francis School of Nursing in Wichita and graduated as a Registered Nurse in 1968.

On July 14, 1968, Mary was united in marriage to Stanley Robert Kurtz. They made their home on the farm near Eureka. Mary worked at the Greenwood County Hospital for 32 years. She then worked for Dr. Morris in Eureka, the Madison Manor Nursing Home, and retired from the Eureka Nursing Center in 2011. Stanley preceded her in death on Christmas Day, 2006.

Mary was a member of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution, the Greenwood County Historical Society Board, the United Methodist Women, and was a Lay Leader of the First United Methodist Church of Eureka.

She is survived by three children, Robert and wife, Shari Kurtz of Eureka; John Kurtz of Hutchinson; and Melanie and husband, Rusty Bitler of Eureka; four granddaughters: Shelby Melton, Tori Melton, Charlee Bitler, and Shannon Bitler; and three siblings, sister, June Hannah of Pegram, Tennessee; Shirley Johnson of Amarillo, Texas; and Darrel Sauder of Rapid City, South Dakota. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and three brothers, Merle, Cline, and Gene.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 A.M., Thursday, March 19, 2015 at Koup Family Funeral Home, Eureka with Reverend Kenneth Baker of the First United Methodist Church officiating. Interment will follow at Greenwood Cemetery. Visitation hours are set from 5:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M., Wednesday, at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that memorials be made to the First United Methodist Church or to the Stanley & Mary Kurtz Memorial Scholarship Fund. Contributions may be sent in care of Koup Family Funeral Home, P.O. Box 595, Eureka, KS 67045, which was in charge of service arrangements.
