Mary Wilma Shipman-Scott Houston
Mary W. Houston of Eureka, died on June 4, 2012 at the Eureka Nursing Center at the age of 87.
She was born in Howard, Kansas the daughter of Homer O. and Nellie (VanRoyen) Shipman. Mary was raised in Howard and attended local schools. On October 8, 1940 Mary was united in marriage to Carl Scott this marriage later ended in divorce. On May 12, 1973 she was united in marriage to Truman Houston who preceded her in death in 1995. When the children were grown Mary went to work at various jobs including an Implement Company, Iowa Beef and a sewing factory.
She was baptized in the Christian Church in Howard. She was a member of the EHU and a local card club.
She is survived by her daughters, Marcia “Janie” and husband, Pat Elliott of Howard; Reta and husband, Larry Strotkamp of Wichita; Cheryl and husband, Lenny Tyson of Eureka; step-daughters, Trudy Houston and Patty Houston of California; daughter-in-law, Freda Scott of Fredonia; seventeen grandchildren; thirty-six great-grandchildren; and sixteen great-great-grandchildren; sister, Marinea Phillips of Belle Plaine; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband; son, Carl W. Scott Jr.; two sisters; four brothers; son-in-law, Charlie Samuels; and two grandchildren..
Funeral services will be at 10:30 A.M., Friday, June 8, 2012 at Koup Family Funeral Home with Pastor Mark Demas officiating of the Hamilton United Methodist Church officiating. Interment will follow at Greenwood Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that memorials be made to the Matt Samuels Community Building Restoration and Refurbishing Fund. Contributions may be sent in care of Koup Family Funeral Home at P.O. Box 595, Eureka, KS 67045, which was in charge of service arrangements.
