Margaret D. (Fee) Lilley passed away on Sunday, February 04, 2007, at Medicalodge in Eureka, at the age of 95.
Margaret was born to G.W. and Sarah Frances (Taylor) Fee, on December 20, 1911, the youngest of six children. She was a native of Piedmont, and a 1929 graduate of Piedmont High School. After graduation, she attended Pittsburg College for her Teacher’s Manual Training certificate. Margaret taught in the one-room school districts of Hawthorne and Harmony. On May 10, 1933, she was united in marriage to John Morton Lilley. To this union, two daughters were born. Morton and Margaret were married sixty-four years, and he preceded her in death on October 26, 1997.
During World War II, Margaret returned to teaching upper elementary grades in the Piedmont district.
Morton and Margaret lived on the farm\ranch they established in 1942, in the Otter Creek Township. Margaret continued management and care of their property after her husband’s death. She moved to Eureka in the fall of 2004. In their early married life, during the Depression years, they lived in Piedmont; Centralia, Washington; and Portland, Oregon. Love of the Flint Hills and their cow-country roots dominated and directed the ultimate pathway of their lives.
Margaret was a loyal and active resident of Piedmont. She was a life-long member of the Piedmont United Methodist Church, and the UMW. She was involved and always contributed her efforts to the Piedmont Study Club, Methodist Youth Fellowship, the Greenwood County 4-H program, and the Piedmont Alumni Association. She taught the high school Sunday classes for years, and organized and initiated the Methodist Youth Choir.
Music was an important part of Margaret’s life. She was gifted with the ability to play and perform with no formal musical training. As early as six years of age, she was a substituting church pianist. She served as regular pianist well into her eighties. She also was soloist for many funerals. Working with young people, music, poetry, literature, and all things rich in beauty or history – these were her passions.
She will be lovingly remembered by those she leaves behind. Margaret was preceded in death by her husband, parents, and all five of her brothers and sisters. She is survived by two daughters, Sue Felter of Eureka; and Kree Ann Angeles of Asheville, North Carolina; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and numerous close nephews, nieces, and cousins.
