Mabel Frances Boardman was born on October 29, 1913 at home in Utopia, Kansas. She was the 2nd child of John Max Denner and Mary Ona Wilson Denner.

She attended schools in the Utopia and Tonovay School and graduated from Tonovay with the class of 1932.

She married Sylvester “Les” Boardman on March 31, 1933 in Emporia, Kansas. She and Lester settled on the home place north of Tonovay School and farmed/ranched. In 1963 they moved to Eureka, Kansas and resided there for the remainder of their life.

She was an accomplished musician playing the piano and teaching some music. She was a beautiful seamstress and cook teaching herself cake decorating and candy making. She taught 4-H cooking for the Bachelor Buttons 4-H Club. She substituted cooking at the Tonovay School and founded the first PTA at Tonovay. She was a Republican Committee Woman for 20 years in Greenwood County. In 1950 she started to work for Greenwood County Weed Department as the secretary, first working for her father John Max Denner and later for Lester Boardman. She worked at this position for 28 years. After retiring from the County she worked as the main cook for the Eureka Senior Center, retiring when she was 80.

She took up bowling in 1957 and she and Lester sponsored several teams over the years. She was the league secretary for over 20 years. She bowled in 34 National Tournaments and won the National Senior Tournament. She bowled until she was 89 years old and enjoyed every minute of it. She also bowled on the travel league from Eureka.

She served as Worthy Matron for the Eastern Star Chapter 17 in Hamilton, Kansas serving with her husband Lester as the Worthy Patron. She was the musician for many years for this organization. She was the State Secretary for the American Legion in Kansas and has been a member of the VFW Post #2494 Ladies Auxiliary in Irving, Texas since the late eighties.

She enjoyed baking and gardening and each year entered items for the Greenwood County Fair and Kansas State Fair winning many ribbons for her wares.

Mabel was a very private person and did not share with many much about herself or her life.

She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, one grandson, one sister, and two brothers. She leaves to mourn her passing her son Lavern Boardman and wife Alma, her daughter Roberta Carnley and husband Wayne, four grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren. Many nephews and nieces and was the oldest living descendent of the Denner family.

The family wants to thank all who have helped to care for her in the last three years. We appreciate the love and care you have given her.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M., Saturday, May 19, 2012 at Koup Family Funeral Home, in Eureka with Reverend Kenneth Baker of the First United Methodist Church officiating. Interment will follow at Greenwood Cemetery. Visitation hours are from 11:00 A.M. to 2:00 P.M., Saturday.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that memorials be made to Friendship Meals or to the Eureka Senior Center Transportation. Contributions may be sent in care of Koup Family Funeral Home at P.O. Box 595, Eureka, KS 67045, which was in charge of service arrangements.
