Lyle Garrett Armitage, Jr., of Eureka died Sunday, April 16, 2006, at his home at the age of 67.
He was born on April 26, 1938, in Emporia, the son of Lyle Garrett Armitage, Sr. and Etta (Reed) Armitage. He was raised in Burkett, attending Burkett Grade School and graduating high school from Hamilton. On May 26, 1956, he was united in marriage to Joyce Sailor in Hamilton. After they were married, Lyle joined the United States Air Force and served his country with honor and dignity.
He was discharged in 1960, and the family moved to Wichita, where he began working as a jet mechanic for Boeing. In 1962, they moved to Emporia where Lyle first began working as a firefighter, before becoming a patrolman with the Emporia Police Department. He later became a detective. At the age of 52, he took an early retirement, at which time the family moved to Eureka Lake. He later returned to law enforcement, joining the Greenwood County Sheriff’s Department. He worked for the sheriff’s department for 10 years, retiring again in 2002.
He was a member of the Fraternal Order of Police, and past president of the Lake Club.
He is survived by his wife, Joyce; two sons, Lyle Garrett Armitage, III of Emporia; and Bob Armitage of Emporia; two daughters, Shari Sidler of Strong City; and Mari Collins of Emporia; eleven grandchildren; and one sister, Norma Bruhn of Nevada, Missouri. He was preceded in death by his parents, and one sister, Mary Ann Hensley.
Memorial services will be held at 10:30 A.M., Wednesday, April 19, 2006 at Koup Family Funeral Home, in Eureka, with Tom Miller officiating. Cremation has been effected. Inurnment will follow in Blakely Cemetery, in Madison.
