Luella Mae “Lou” Ferguson, of Eureka, died on Wednesday, April 14, 2010, at the Eureka Nursing Center, in Eureka, at the age of 89.

She was born on August 27, 1920, near Fall River, Kansas, the daughter of Frank Butler and Grace (Noakes) Prichard. She was raised in southern Greenwood County and graduated from Severy High School with the class of 1938. After her schooling, Lou worked as a waitress at the café in the Greenwood Hotel in Eureka.

On August 26, 1942, Lou was united in marriage to Marlin F. Ferguson in Baxter Springs, Kansas. They made their home near Climax, where Lou farmed and ranched with Marlin and was a homemaker. He preceded her in death on June 15, 1979. Lou continued to work cattle after Marlin’s death until 1993.

Lou was a member of the Climax United Methodist Church.

She is survived by two step-daughters, Fredda Helm of Topeka; and Patricia Crouch of Eureka; five step-grandchildren; five step-great-grandchildren; and three step-great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and one brother.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M., Saturday, April 17, 2010, at Koup Family Funeral Home, in Eureka, with Mr. Kevin Lawrence of the Climax United Methodist Church officiating. Interment will follow in Greenwood Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that memorials be made to the Climax United Methodist Church or to the Eureka Nursing Center Employee Benefit Fund, or to Friendship Meals. Contributions may be sent in care of Koup Family Funeral Home at P.O. Box 595, Eureka, KS 67045, which was in charge of service arrangements.
