Leta Mae Sherrill of Hamilton, died on Wednesday, November 28, 2012 at Via Christi – St. Francis Hospital, in Wichita, at the age of 86.

She was born on January 8, 1926, in Hamilton, the daughter of Oscar Theodore and Coie DeVore (McCloud) Smith. She was raised in Hamilton and graduated from Hamilton High School with the class of 1944. On July 4, 1947, Leta was united in marriage to William “Bill” George Sherrill in Emporia. To this union, three children were born. They made their home in Emporia.

In 1963, the family moved to Wichita, while Bill worked for the railroad. In 1970, they returned to Emporia. Bill preceded her in death on December 11, 1980. Leta returned to Hamilton in 1988.

She was a member of the Sorosis Club, the Embroidery Club, the Hamilton City Library Board, the Red Hat Society, and was a Past President of the Order of the Eastern Star, of which she was a 65+ year member. Leta was a KU superfan, she loved doing crafts and woodworking, and she loved watching all of her birds. She always attended all athletic events and activities that her grandchildren and great-grandchildren were part of.

Leta is survived by three children, daughter, Cindy and husband, Gene Rayburn of Hamilton; son, Jeff Sherrill of Cody, Wyoming; daughter, Terry and husband, Rick Parks of Wichita; seven grandchildren; eighteen great-grandchildren; and one sister, Margie Gregory of Paradise, California. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, one grandchild, one great-grandchild, five brothers, and one sister.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M., Saturday, December 1, 2012 at the Hamilton Community Fellowship Church, in Hamilton with Pastor Dean Fox officiating. Interment will follow at Janesville Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that memorials be made to the Hamilton City Library. Contributions may be sent in care of Koup Family Funeral Home at P.O. Box 595, Eureka, KS 67045, which was in charge of service arrangements.
