Leslie Harold Sherman of Toronto, died on February 4, 2013 at Newman Regional Hospital in Emporia at the age of 92.
Leslie was born on April 23, 1920 in Toronto, the son of Allen Coates and Sadie (Curtis) Sherman. He attended schools in Toronto and graduated from Toronto High School. He then attended Kansas State University and went to ROTC. Leslie then joined the Army serving his country with honor and dignity during WWII. He was with the 81st Infantry and was discharged as a Captain. After his discharge he taught Land Management to Veterans and farmed. He then was a Captain at the Toronto Honor Camp before he retired in 1985. Leslie then worked the farm with his brother.
On June 10, 1948, Leslie was united in marriage to Peggy Lee Miller in Wichita, Kansas. They made their home in Toronto. Peggy preceded him in death. Leslie then met Alberta Pivonka who became his long-term companion.
Leslie was a member of the Toronto Masonic Lodge, the Midian Shrine, American Legion #325, and the American Soil Conservation Service.
He is survived by his daughter, Candace Sherman of Strong City; son, Leslie Sherman Jr. of Potwin; and one grandchild Spencer Sherman; brothers Kenneth Sherman of Wichita, Edwin Sherman of Toronto and Elmer Sherman of Toronto. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, and two brothers and one sister.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 A.M., Saturday, February 9, 2013 at the Toronto First United Methodist Church in Toronto.
In lieu of flowers a memorial has been established in name to the Toronto Senior Center and may be left in care of the funeral at P.O. Box 595, Eureka, Kansas 67045.
