Leona King, of Eureka, died on Friday, December 5, 2003, at Medicalodge of Eureka at the age of 86.
She was born in Goodland, Kansas, on January 23, 1917, the daughter of John L. and Alice (Frid) Goss. She was raised in Osage City and Emporia, graduating from Emporia High School with the class of 1934. She then attended Kansas State Teachers College in Emporia, graduated with a degree in teaching with the class of 1938, and began her teaching career. During her career, she taught school in Quincy, Virgil, Fall River, Richmond, Ottawa, and Maize.
On August 7, 1941, Leona was united in marriage to Homer L. Dame. He was killed in the line of duty in 1944, in the English Channel during World War II.
On December 21, 1946, Leona was married to Leon J. “Duke” King. They made their home in several Kansas communities before settling in Maize. After their retirement they moved to Eureka in 1979. Duke preceded her in death on September 18, 1999.
Leona is survived by one brother, Robert Goss of Sun City, Arizona, two sisters-in-law, Ceola Geist and Nora Huston both of Eureka, and two nieces, Kathryn Williams of Eureka and Betty Rose of Emporia. She was preceded in death by her parents, both husbands, and four brothers.
Memorial services will be held at 2:00 P.M., Monday, December 8, 2003, at Koup Family Funeral Home. Inurnment will follow in Quincy Cemetery.
